For more than four decades, Robert “Bob” McCamy exemplified what it means to be a Rotarian. Since joining the Rotary Club of Wake Forest on February 1, 1983, Bob devoted 43 years to serving others with humility, integrity, and unwavering dedication. His leadership, kindness, and quiet commitment helped shape not only our club but also the Wake Forest community he loved.
Bob believed that the greatest impact often comes without seeking recognition. Week after week and year after year, he faithfully lived Rotary's motto, Service Above Self, through mentorship, leadership, community service, and genuine friendship. To generations of Rotarians, Bob was a trusted mentor, a welcoming friend, and a steady example of what servant leadership looks like.
Remembering Bob
Throughout his Rotary journey, Bob served twice as President of the Rotary Club of Wake Forest, helped steward scholarship programs, mentored countless new members, welcomed Rotary Youth Exchange students from around the world, and supported service projects that reached both our local community and communities across the globe. His influence extended far beyond the meetings he attended, leaving a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to serve alongside him.
In 2026, Bob received one of Wake Forest's highest civic honors, the Vivian A. Jones Peace Prize. In a rare and unanimous decision, the selection committee recognized Bob's lifetime of service and extraordinary contributions to the community. Although health challenges prevented him from attending the ceremony, his daughter proudly accepted the award on his behalf. The standing ovation that followed reflected the deep respect and gratitude felt throughout Wake Forest for a man whose quiet leadership had touched so many lives.
As fellow Rotarian Mark Scarborough so fittingly described him, Bob was “a steady presence at the gate”: faithful, humble, dependable, and foundational. Those words capture not only the Rotarian he was, but the friend, mentor, and community leader so many came to know and admire.

On Friday, July 31, 2026, the Rotary Club of Wake Forest lost one of its most cherished members. While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate an extraordinary life dedicated to service. Bob's legacy lives on in every scholarship awarded, every new member encouraged, every service project completed, and every life changed through Rotary.
His example reminds us that lasting impact is not measured by recognition, but by a lifetime spent lifting others.
