Wake Forest Rotary Pays off Medical Debt for local residents

Government Affairs of WakeMed Health & Hospitals, Andi Curtis formally received the $8,450.10 Medical Debt Relief check from Wake Forest Rotary President Karlene Turrentine. This amount and the generosity of Wake Med will help eliminate $169,000 of past-due medical debt for 13 Wake Forest residents who had some cancer treatment type. Underway for two years, this project was conceived by former President Brad Walker and member Roger Scott. Assisted by committee members Rod Miller, Rich Perkins, and Bob McCamy, the Marga-Relay-Ville 5k Race became the fundraiser that made a dream become a reality.

“I’m thrilled we did this,” Roger said to the club, urging others to step up and handle similar future fundraisers to benefit the cause. With Andi Curtis, Liz Watson, and other Wake Med staff, Wake Forest Rotary initially chose 13 recipients for budgetary reasons. However, as Brad noted to the club, at least 25 recipients were eligible two years ago, so we need to continue raising money to pay off the others. Today, with covid still with us, that number could be much greater now.
